Jeremiah 4:1  “If you will return, O Israel,” says the Lord, “Return to Me; And if you will put away your abominations out of My sight, Then you shall not be moved.

When I was younger the Beatles had a song called Getting Better. Like most of their songs it had a catchy lyric. They repeated several times, “I’ve got to admit, it’s getting better; a little better all the time!” It’s a great song, but is that really true? I am an optimistic person and I sometimes border on the naive, but I can’t create a reality where it seems that things are just getting better and better! In fact, at the risk of being a downer, it seems the opposite is true.

Why would that be? I put to you that it is because more and more our society has leaned into Adam and Eve’s original sin. They wanted to eat from the one tree they were told not to - the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They didn’t want to let God be the one to decide what was good and evil. They wanted a go at that. We’ve been doing that more and more and we are in a mess. It can seem that there is not much hope. Society is adrift.

But Jeremiah has hope for us! He preached to Israel but the message is universal. If we will return to God things will get better! If we put away our own ideas of good and bad and accept God’s plan we won’t be moved!

Maybe if we sing that chorus with God as the object of our devotion it really could be true!

    It's getting better since You've been mine.
