Back In the Day

Job 9:33 If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together,

“Kids today!” “Back in my day…”

Some people wish for something that would make them appear much younger than they are. That search continues. But if you want to appear much older, one surefire method is to begin sprinkling the kind of statements I began with in your casual conversations! Whether it’s true or not, I come off as an old man when I express how things used to be!

But Job could really make a case. He lived so long ago. Even before Moses. So when he bemoaned the lack of a mediator, he was not exaggerating. Would he have been longing for a priest like Exodus or Leviticus described? Maybe. But I think really he was wishing for something much better. A Mediator Who could really bridge the gap between himself and God Almighty. Maybe One Who always had the ear of God. One Who knew what it was like to be God, but also had firsthand knowledge of the struggles of living as a man on earth.

When it comes to salvation history, we don’t long for the ‘good old days’ at all. We are living in the best of times because we have such a Mediator! Jesus Christ is all of those things. He is our Great High Priest! He sits at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us! We can cast all our anxieties on Him because He cares for us!

I may be old enough to have had one or two wistful thoughts about wishing things were as they used to be. But I have no desire at all to live at a time before Jesus came into the world!

Blessings,

Pastor Russ
