Fear Itself?

August 10, 2026, 7:37 AM

Isaiah 42:4  He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

In the midst of the Great Depression, as FDR took the oath of office, he uttered the famous words, “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” It’s a great line! Interestingly enough the context was one that might have surprised a great many people. For the reason-able reaction to the events of the time was fear! But when the president took this bold stance it emboldened the people.

Jesus came to do God’s will. He did not have an easy time of it while He was on the earth. But He was faithful all the way to the cross. After the resurrection, He met with His disciples and told them, as He was about to go to Heaven, to go into all the world and preach the Gospel.

Jesus came to bring His kingdom to earth. Amazingly, the method He chose involves us! His followers are to spread the Gospel and enlarge the church. As we. Do that His kingdom comes. It is exciting to contemplate. But also kinda scary. We can become frozen with fear in trying to follow this directive of Jesus.

But we can also take courage from knowing that He won’t fail and He won’t be discouraged! He never yet has had an occasion to say, “I didn’t see that coming!” Or, “What am I gonna do now!?” And He said He’d be with us. Let’s not let fear stand in our way!
