Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.
A growing number of people have never had a phone with an actual bell that would ring until either it was answered or the caller gave up. That type of phone was hard to ignore. You couldn’t look at it and know who was calling. It probably was not connected to an answering machine. A caller could be insistent and, if they were, the ringing was insistent.
Jesus stands at ‘the door’ and knocks. It’s a metaphorical door. It’s the door to our heart. Jesus stands there, patiently knocking. It’s a great image and one of which you may have seen a painting. Just consider the image: the Almighty Creator of the Universe, Who spoke the world into existence is knocking! He just stands there. Knock. Knock. Knock.
Back in the day, if you were visiting someone and their phone rang you would expect some action. If they sat and ignored it, you might ask, “are you going to answer that?” If they said, “no” and just left it ringing you would wonder why (and probably be annoyed at the ringing!) But Jesus stands there. Knock. Knock. Knock.
Why doesn’t He just go in? If you look closely at the painting you will notice that there is no doorknob on the outside. But I have read the resurrection accounts and doorknobs are no longer a necessity to Jesus! The disciples were in a locked room and He just came on in! But this door is different. He won’t just come on in. He waits for us to invite Him. If we will, He will come in and He will dine with us - meaning we will have a relationship with Him! But until we do invite Him He just stands there. Knock. Knock. Knock.
Knock. Knock. Knock. Are you going to answer that?
