I Chronicles 29:3 Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver:
When I was a kid my dad liked to go fishing. That probably is an understatement! He loved it! You would get an idea of how much he enjoyed fishing by seeing his gear. From the boat to the giant tackle box it was apparent that he was into fishing! You could have made assumptions about where his heart was by examining his checkbook!
David spent the last energies of his kingship and life in preparation for the building of the temple. He had wanted to do it himself, but God said his son, Solomon, would be the man for that job. Not showing any discouragement at that news, David did what he could. He began amassing all the building materials that Solomon would need when the time came for building. The Chronicler details all that was gathered and it was extensive.
But David was not satisfied with that. All that had been gathered was the kingdom’s part. He wanted to personally donate to the project. He gave a generous amount from ‘his own special treasure of gold and silver.’ And why did he do this? Because he had ‘set his affection on the house of his God.’ His affection, his love for the house of God showed forth in a tangible way.
We should also set our affection on the house of God. We should be part of a church and we should give from our own special treasure to the working of that church. God has blessed us and we should, in response, be a part of His kingdom work. Could others tell where our heart is by examining our checkbook or expenses? Actually, they could. The real question is, is our heart in the right place?
