Remember!

Jude 17 But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ

In the US today about 91% of people have a smartphone. Most of those are rarely far from their phone. It could be said that the sum total of all that has ever been known is easily within reach. Yet it doesn’t seem to be making us smarter! In fact, a case could be made that we know less because we feel like we don’t have to know. Our phone knows.

When I read the Gospels, one thing that always stands out is how Jesus always seemed to have an appropriate word of Scripture ready at hand. Yet I’ve never seem Him depicted in any painting as holding a phone! He had taken the time to memorize Scripture.

Memorization of Scripture is one of the best things we can do. It takes a little time. It takes a determined effort. But in all of that, you’re reviewing and internalizing God’s Word. You are working to “remember the words which where spoken before by the apostles of our Lord.

Having internalized God’s Word can only bring you closer to Him. It can only make you more fit for following Him. For successfully fighting temptation. Even if you think you don’t have a good memory. Even if you have a low level of confidence in success, start small. Pick a verse or two that you’re familiar with, but not sure if you can quote it exactly and begin there. (John 3:16? Genesis 1:1?) Imagine how much more capable you’ll feel as a disciple of Christ if you can readily quote Scripture!

It’s a suggestion from me, but it kind of reads like a command from the Bible! Try it!
