Sluggish?

March 2, 2026, 7:33 AM

Hebrews 6:12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

I have long taught private lessons. I have had a number of students on bass, guitar, and a few other instruments. The beauty of those lessons is that we can really see each other. I can watch and listen to them play and show them what’s going well and where they need to adjust. They can watch me and see how I do what they’re trying to do. Occasionally I have a student that misses a couple of weeks. It’s always an obvious setback. If it happens too much they really suffer.

The author of the Letter to the Hebrews understood this concept as well. This isn’t the only place he addresses it. Too many people think that Christianity and church are perhaps related concepts, but not integrally connected. They couldn’t be more wrong. The church is God’s idea and His plan for us to grow more like Him.

Through faithful church attendance we will see other people living the faith. They will see us. We together hear the Word preached and we imitate what we see and hear. I can try to connect with God on my own, but I will go astray without availing myself of what He provided - the church. In fact, as we read here, when we try to go it alone we risk becoming sluggish. The definition of sluggish is: indisposed to action or exertion.

Jesus called His people to mission. How can I be on a mission if I am indisposed to action or exertion?
