Step One

I Timothy 6:6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.

I was recently watching a show with my grandsons and as it neared the end, one of them asked, “are there more of these?” I guess one is never enough. So much of our lives are wrapped up in questions like that. It’s really no surprise. Kids are taught to be this way by toy manufacturers who actively try to create the next craze. ‘Gotta catch ‘em all!’ But it doesn’t stop with kids. We learn to look for more.

It’s so easy to be discontent. To always wonder if there’s more. But Paul wrote to Timothy of the importance and value of contentment. We know we should be content. We might wish to be content. But Paul was not only speaking of contentment. He said that godliness with contentment was great gain. We should not miss the first step.

Jesus didn’t come just to make this life better. He didn’t die on the cross to give you a ‘glow up.’ He came to transform our lives to be all that He imagined they could be. He came to give us new creation, to live His kind of life. That’s godliness. And if we have that, we have a good shot at contentment. Having both of those is the definition of great gain and that’s something worth having!
