Isaiah 21:6 For thus has the Lord said to me: “Go, set a watchman, Let him declare what he sees.”
I’ve seen a lot of movies where some group is involved in some action and they set one guy apart. He will act as the lookout. He is told, “If you see trouble, let us know!” But what if he did, and they paid him no attention? What if disaster struck? Would his status as a lookout be in question? Wouldn’t it rather be obvious that he did his job, but was ignored?
We have the ultimate Lookout - the ultimate Watchman - in God. He has foreseen everything! He’s never surprised. There’s never an occasion where God says, “Wow! I didn’t see that coming!” He has supernaturally preserved His Word, the Bible, for us. The Bible can act as our lookout.
Now obviously, we don’t read the Bible to find out what’s going to happen today at noon. But if we are diligent to read God’s Word daily, we will be able to discern so much of what seems a mystery to others. That shouldn’t really come as a surprise since we refer to the Bible as ‘God’s revealed Word.’
But the Bible is long and confusing! It’s so hard to understand!
Maybe, but what if we began by reading His Word everyday, and listening to and acting upon what we do understand?
God has given His Word, the Bible. It can act as a great lookout. But it won’t help to have a lookout if we ignore it when it speaks!
